Hundreds of suppliers at the Addison shows are armed with updates and programs lined up for the Fall and beyond. Here are just a few:
Easier access: This past August, St. Vincent & the Grenadines broke ground for it's first international airport, located on the eastern coast of St. Vincent. Upon completion in 2011, the Argyle International Airport will be able to accommodate bigger aircraft like the B747-400, enabling non-stop and direct flights from gateways in the U.S., Canada, Latin America and London, U.K.
Moving from land to sea, have you heard that Carnival Cruise Lines is building its largest ship? Debuting in September 2009, the 130,000-tonne Carnival Dream will carry 3,646 passengers. Amenities include an aqua park; "scenic whirlpools" that extend over the ship's beam; and a variety of new stateroom categories like those catering to families. The liner will operate year-round in the Caribbean from Port Canaveral, Florida.
Big is in. Barcelo Hotels & Resorts is in the midst of developing the largest hotel complex in Cuba, the Barcelo Cayo Santa Maria. The first hotel at this resort will open on November 14, with the second property scheduled to be completed in February 2009. This entire resort, which is expected to be ready by winter 2009, will feature four four-star hotels, a state-of-the-art spa, a bowling alley and restaurants. Heading east to a different part of the Caribbean, the Barcelo Bavaro Beach in the Dominican Republic is undergoing refurbishments and will reopen on December 23. The property will feature 522 deluxe junior suites each with a jacuzzi on the balcony.
When the temperatures become cooler here in Canada, get tempted by the offerings in Fun Sun Vacations' sun book. Comprising 52 pages, this brochure lists new additions to its line-up including the 5-star Fiesta Americana hotel chain in Mexico, the Atlantis properties in the Bahamas, and the 4-star Ku Hotel and 3-star Sirena Resort in Anguilla. You can also pick up Fun Sun's latest 56-page Hawaii brochure at the show.
The Tourist Office of Spain would like to put out the word that Spain is a safe destination, providing good value for money. This year, Spain rolled out the AVE train, a high speed locomotive, making day travel between cities possible. For instance, with the new train, it now takes 2.5 hours to journey from Madrid to Barcelona - it is about seven hours on the regular rail. This service runs from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. daily and is currently the fastest train in Europe. AVE operates from Madrid to Barcelona, Malaga, Sevilla, Toledo and Zaragoza.
Romance is the focus of the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Office. Discover how to fall in love with the people, food and culture of this two-island destination. For guests who would like to experience a non all-inclusive vacation, there's the VIP (Very Intimate Places), small Antiguan-owned and operated inns that provide a local flavour to the vacation experience.
For a change in scenery, pick up a copy of the newly released California Road Trips 2008. This 32-page guide features detailed maps leading to the state's historical sites, organic wineries, stunning coastline and beyond. Also, get the lowdown on Spa Terra, a luxury spa cave situated at the Meritage Resort & Spa. Spanning 2,044 square metres, this spa, located entirely underground, allows guests to relax in steam grottos and soaking pools while listening to the natural sounds of waterfalls.
On the topic of relaxing, did you know that Hyatt Hotels & Resorts has rolled out a new brand? Andaz, an eco-conscious brand, offers a five-star experience that is casual but topped with personalized service. And while you're at the booth, don't forget to obtain your Hyatt '"passport'". Get the '"passport'" stamped by each hotel represented to stand a chance of winning complimentary room stays and meals at various properties in the U.S. Winners will be drawn at the end of the show.
